Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD)

4 min reading · Exercises take additional time

0 of 11 lessons completed for this visit

MACD compares a faster exponential moving average with a slower one, then smooths their difference to create a signal line. It helps describe changes in trend and momentum, but all components come from past prices. The related chart uses computed hypothetical data; its crossings are illustrations rather than trade recommendations.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish the MACD line, signal line and histogram.
  • Calculate their relationships from supplied values.
  • Explain lag, scaling and the limitations of crossings.

Three related components

A common configuration is 12, 26, 9. The MACD line equals the 12-period EMA minus the 26-period EMA. The signal line is a nine-period EMA of the MACD line, not another EMA of price. The histogram equals MACD minus signal. Other periods are possible, but their meaning depends on the timeframe.

MACD and its histogram are expressed in price units rather than a fixed zero-to-100 range. Values from instruments with very different price scales are not directly comparable. A histogram bar of one can be large for one series and small for another. Initialization and historical warm-up affect the underlying EMAs and the signal calculation.

What crossings actually describe

MACD above zero means the faster EMA is above the slower EMA. MACD crossing its signal means their difference changed sign. A positive histogram that becomes smaller means MACD is moving closer to the signal; it does not necessarily mean price is falling or that MACD itself has crossed below zero.

The histogram can contract while price continues rising because the relationship between the averages is changing. Likewise, a bullish signal crossover can happen with MACD still below zero. These observations describe different relationships and should not be treated as interchangeable buy or sell commands.

Market context and realistic rules

Sustained trends may produce clearer MACD sequences than narrow ranges, where frequent crossings can accumulate costs. Because MACD applies multiple layers of averaging, signals can arrive after a substantial price move. Faster settings may reduce some delay while increasing sensitivity to brief fluctuations.

Divergence between selected price peaks and MACD peaks can flag changing momentum, but peak selection and confirmation delays matter. Define any divergence rule mechanically before testing it. Use completed-bar information, specify executable order timing, and evaluate exits and risk limits separately. Combining MACD with several moving averages does not automatically create independent confirmation because the tools share much of their input.

Key terms

MACD line
Fast EMA minus slow EMA.
Signal line
An EMA of the MACD line.
Histogram
MACD line minus signal line.

Hypothetical MACD components

  1. Assume EMA12 = 105 and EMA26 = 102.
  2. MACD = 105 − 102 = 3.
  3. Assume the signal line is 2. Histogram = 3 − 2 = 1.
  4. The positive histogram means MACD is above its signal, not that the next return is known.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing a signal-line crossing with a zero-line crossing.
  • Interpreting a smaller positive histogram as proof of falling price.
  • Comparing raw MACD magnitudes across differently priced instruments.

Lesson summary

MACD measures relationships among smoothed historical prices. Its components have precise meanings, but neither their crossings nor divergences guarantee continuation or reversal.

Practical exercise

Keep MACD at 3 and raise the signal to 3.5. The histogram becomes −0.5 although MACD remains positive. Explain the difference between those two statements.

Knowledge check

Check your understanding

1. If EMA12 is 105, EMA26 is 102 and signal is 2, what is the histogram?
2. What does a MACD value above zero establish?
