Pips, points and pip value

A pip describes a conventional unit of price movement. Pip value tells you what that movement means for a particular position. Separating distance from money prevents the common mistake of assuming every pip is always worth ten dollars.

What you will learn

  • Calculate pip and fractional-point movement
  • Calculate pip value from underlying units
  • Identify when currency conversion is required

Price distance is not money

For most non-JPY Forex pairs, a conventional pip is 0.0001. For JPY-quoted pairs, it is usually 0.01. Platforms often quote an additional decimal place: a fractional-pip point may be 0.00001 or 0.001 respectively. Platform terminology varies, so check the contract specification rather than applying Forex pip conventions to gold or indices.

Calculate distance by subtracting entry from exit and taking the absolute value. Divide that distance by the pip size. This tells you movement, not profit. Trade direction, position size, account currency and costs are separate inputs.

Calculate the value of one pip

For conventional FX units, pip value in quote currency equals base-currency units multiplied by pip size. A 10,000 EUR position in EUR/USD has a quote-currency pip value of 10,000 × 0.0001 = USD 1. A 100,000 EUR position would have USD 10 per pip, but neither value applies to every volume.

For USD/JPY, 10,000 USD × 0.01 gives JPY 100 per pip. To express that in USD at a hypothetical closing rate of 150.00, divide by 150: approximately USD 0.67. A third account currency needs a separate explicit conversion rate. Conversion values change with rates.

Use calculators as a check

First write the units and formula on paper, then compare with the KFX Forex Calculator or Pip Value Calculator. Use manual illustrative rates for practice, not invented live prices. If the calculator and paper disagree, inspect pip size, lots versus units and conversion direction before trusting either result.

Key terms

Pip
A conventional unit of Forex price movement.
Point
A platform-defined price increment; often one tenth of a pip on fractional Forex quotes.
Pip value
The monetary value of one pip for a specified position and currency.

Distance and value together

  1. Hypothetical EUR/USD entry is 1.2000 and exit is 1.2035. Difference = 0.0035.
  2. Pips = 0.0035 ÷ 0.0001 = 35. Fractional points = 0.0035 ÷ 0.00001 = 350.
  3. For 10,000 EUR, pip value = USD 1. A buy has gross P/L of 35 × USD 1 = USD 35; a sell has the opposite sign, before costs.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing pips with fractional points: record the platform's increment.
  • Using USD 10 per pip for every position: calculate from actual units.
  • Applying Forex pip sizes to CFDs: use verified instrument specifications.

Lesson summary

Pips measure distance. Pip value depends on the position and currencies. Calculate size and conversion separately, and exclude no costs silently.

Practical exercise

USD/JPY moves from 150.00 to 150.25. Calculate pips and the quote-currency value of that movement for 10,000 USD. Answers: 25 pips and JPY 2,500 before costs; direction determines the sign.

Knowledge check

Check your understanding

1. EUR/USD moves from 1.2000 to 1.2035. How many pips? Enter a number.
2. What is one pip worth in quote currency for 10,000 EUR of EUR/USD?
