A breakout moves beyond a defined boundary. A false breakout returns inside under a predefined rule. A pullback is a move against the recent direction; a retest revisits a previously identified level. These events are descriptions, not guaranteed sequences.

What you will learn

  • Define breakout and false-break rules
  • Distinguish pullback from retest
  • Account for fast-market execution

Define confirmation before observing

Choose a boundary, a close or intrabar trigger, and any tolerance in advance. An intrabar breach can disappear before the candle closes. A closing filter avoids some breaches but introduces delay and may give a less favourable price. Test the trade-off instead of declaring one method always superior.

Retests are optional

After a break, price may retest the old zone, continue without a retest or reverse completely. A pullback can be a pause or the start of a new trend. Distinguish these possibilities with an invalidation condition. Do not chase a missed move by abandoning the size and price assumptions in the plan.

Execution can dominate the example

Fast breaks may coincide with wider spreads and slippage. A stop order can fill beyond its trigger; a limit order may not fill at all. Historical candles do not show which order in a stop/target pair occurred first. Include gaps, costs and missed fills when testing.

Key terms

Breakout
A move beyond a predefined boundary.
Retest
A later revisit to a previously identified zone.

Worked chart study · Breakouts, False Breakouts, Pullbacks and Retests

  1. Resistance zone is 1.1095–1.1105. A candle closes at 1.1120.
  2. Later price visits 1.1100: this is a zone retest.
  3. If the chosen failure rule is a close below 1.1095, a close at 1.1080 invalidates it. There is no guaranteed bounce.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing the stated chart rule after seeing the outcome instead of recording a new test.
  • Treating a historical description as a guaranteed future result or ignoring execution costs.
  • Skipping the timeframe, source or invalidation condition before drawing a conclusion.

Lesson summary

A breakout moves beyond a defined boundary. A false breakout returns inside under a predefined rule. A pullback is a move against the recent direction; a retest revisits a previously identified level. These events are descriptions, not guaranteed sequences. Use an explicit rule, consider contrary evidence and practise without risking real money.

Practical exercise

Write three paths after a breakout: continuation, successful retest and false break. Include a testable rule and one execution risk for each.
