Market structure compares swing highs and lows. HH means higher high, HL higher low, LH lower high and LL lower low. These labels organise the selected timeframe; the definition of a swing must be explicit.
What you will learn
- Label comparable HH/HL/LH/LL swings
- Explain swing confirmation delay
- Recognise mixed structure

Define the swing rule
One rule identifies a swing high when its high exceeds two neighbouring highs on each side; a corresponding low is below neighbouring lows. This confirmation requires future bars, so the swing is not known at the pivot in real time. Other rules use a minimum distance or a reversal threshold. Changing the rule changes the structure.
Compare like with like
Higher highs and higher lows often describe an advancing sequence; lower highs and lower lows a declining one. Overlapping or mixed swings can describe a transition or range. Compare swings on the same interval and source. A tiny five-minute lower low need not break a daily higher-low sequence.
A break is evidence, not certainty
A close below a prior higher low challenges one uptrend definition. It may precede a decline, a range or recovery. Define whether a wick or a close counts as a break, and account for spreads and false breaks. Do not label every new micro-swing as a confirmed trend change after seeing later prices.
Key terms
- HH / HL
- A higher swing high / higher swing low than the prior comparable swing.
- LH / LL
- A lower swing high / lower swing low than the prior comparable swing.

Worked chart study · Market Structure: HH, HL, LH and LL
- Hypothetical highs are 1.1050 then 1.1100; lows are 1.1000 then 1.1030.
- The second high is HH and second low is HL.
- A later close at 1.0990 falls below both listed lows and challenges continuation, but does not guarantee further decline.
| Observation | Illustrative value / meaning |
|---|---|
| High comparison | 1.1050 → 1.1100: HH |
| Low comparison | 1.1000 → 1.1030: HL |
| Challenge | Close below 1.1030 |

Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing the stated chart rule after seeing the outcome instead of recording a new test.
- Treating a historical description as a guaranteed future result or ignoring execution costs.
- Skipping the timeframe, source or invalidation condition before drawing a conclusion.
Lesson summary
Market structure compares swing highs and lows. HH means higher high, HL higher low, LH lower high and LL lower low. These labels organise the selected timeframe; the definition of a swing must be explicit. Use an explicit rule, consider contrary evidence and practise without risking real money.
Practical exercise
Label each swing in the illustration using one fixed rule. Write which labels would only become known after later bars.
