Practical Chart Analysis

0 of 15 lessons completed for this visit

This lesson combines description, alternative scenarios and a loss calculation. The exercise is hypothetical and can be repeated in demo practice; it is not a live signal or a recommendation to trade EUR/USD.

What you will learn

  • Produce a complete annotated analysis
  • Calculate an adverse scenario
  • Review rules separately from outcome

Illustrative educational chart · Not live market data

Hypothetical price index · Not a tradeable instrument. Fixed hypothetical observations, not a forecast or trading signal.

Begin with a fixed snapshot

Write the source, timeframe, quote side and whether the last candle is complete. Label swings using the same rule as earlier lessons, then mark the nearest relevant zones. Do not move the zone after seeing a break. Note whether the chart shows a trend, range or ambiguous transition.

Plan continuation and failure

Suppose higher lows form near 1.1030 and resistance lies near 1.1100. A close above resistance could support one continuation scenario, while a close below the chosen low challenges it. Neither event requires an entry. Include scheduled news, spread and provider hours in the decision, and write a no-trade condition.

Calculate and review

If a hypothetical entry is 1.1110 and planned adverse exit 1.1080, distance is 30 conventional pips. At 10,000 EUR units this is USD 30 gross risk, not including costs or gap risk. Record the plan before revealing later prices; then review adherence and outcome separately. A winning deviation is still a process deviation.

Key terms

Trade hypothesis
A conditional idea with explicit evidence and invalidation.
Process review
Checking whether predefined rules were followed.

Worked chart study · Practical Chart Analysis

  1. Hypothetical buy entry 1.1110; adverse exit 1.1080; favourable exit 1.1170.
  2. Adverse distance = 30 pips; favourable distance = 60 pips. At 10,000 EUR, gross outcomes are −USD 30 and +USD 60.
  3. The nominal 2:1 reward/risk does not specify win probability. Costs, fills and missed trades alter realised results.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing the stated chart rule after seeing the outcome instead of recording a new test.
  • Treating a historical description as a guaranteed future result or ignoring execution costs.
  • Skipping the timeframe, source or invalidation condition before drawing a conclusion.

Lesson summary

This lesson combines description, alternative scenarios and a loss calculation. The exercise is hypothetical and can be repeated in demo practice; it is not a live signal or a recommendation to trade EUR/USD. Use an explicit rule, consider contrary evidence and practise without risking real money.

Practical exercise

Submit a paper analysis with source/timeframe, labelled swings, two zones, two scenarios, invalidation, units, gross adverse result, costs and a no-trade condition. Compare it with the self-check example.

Knowledge check

Check your understanding

1. At 10,000 EUR, what is gross loss from buy 1.1110 to exit 1.1080?
2. Which is the most responsible next step in this study?
